Is Kate Middleton A New Lesbian Icon? Will Kate Middleton And Prince William Support Gay Marriage?
by E-Li
Sarah Waters, novelist who wrote lesbian novel Tipping The Velvet, thinks Kate Middleton will be soon considered as a lesbian icon when Peter Tatchell, LGBTQ activist, asked the princely couple to support marriage equality. All the eyes are on Kate Middleton and Prince William.
Waters indicated that Kate Middleton, been engaged with Prince William, would appeal to lesbians in the same way that Princess Diana did to the gay men.
Speaking at the Man Booker Best of Beryl Prize in Soho, she said: “There is something quite earthy about her which, I think, lesbians will like.”
What do you think about this? I don't really see her as a lesbian icon.
The princess-in-waiting and Prince William have been urged to support marriage equality by gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who has organised a rally outside Buckingham Palace.
He said: “We plan to deliver a giant wedding card to William and Kate. As well as wishing the royal couple every happiness, we will highlight the fact that William and Kate can marry, but same-sex couples can’t.”
“We ask Kate and William to support (...) the right of the same sex couples to marry”. The princely couple is considered modern, and like 61% of the British, according to a survey carried out in June by The Times, they could support gay marriage.
The only problem it is that in United Kingdom, the royal family does not have to intervene in the political debates.

Sarah Palin Retweeted A Pro Gay Message
by E-Li
Sarah Palin astonished everyone when Monday evening, she has retweeted a pro-gay message.
This message written by Tammy Bruce, a lesbian conservative commentator, about the “hypocrisy” of homophobia and anti-gay actions:
"But this hypocrisy is just truly too much. Enuf already--the more someone complains about the homos the more we should look under their bed." about the reference of a captain of the American navy which made some antigay videos.
And this message was retweeted by Sarah Palin.
Bruce defended Palin: "I know Gov Palin & this "anti-gay" meme has been a lie--plain & simple. She's a decent woman & friend to the community."
Believe it or not…

Exploring Gender: Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation
by Cael
When thinking about gender identity, we often discuss it as being separate from sexual orientation, but these two aspects of identity do intersect in some ways. What happens if I have always identified as a lesbian, but now my gender identity is male? It is definitely a complex question.

Ugandan Lesbian Branded By Hot Iron Has To Come Back In Uganda
by E-Li
Betty Tibikawa, 22, which looked for asylum in United Kingdom will not obtain it and will be deported to Uganda. She had already been "punished" in her country for her sexuality branded with a hot iron.
The Guardian told Tibikawa had just finished high school and was due to go to university in Kampala when she was attacked by three men who taunted her about her sexuality. They pinned her down in a disused building and branded her on her inner thighs with a hot iron. They left her unconscious and when she finally managed to get home she was confined to bed for two months. An independent medical report has confirmed that her scars are consistent with being branded with a hot iron.
"I can't sleep and I'm having terrible nightmares about what will happen to me if I'm sent back to Uganda. My family have disowned me because I'm a lesbian and I'm convinced I'd be killed if I'm sent home.
"I was 'outed' in a Ugandan magazine called Red Pepper in February of this year saying that I'm wanted for being a lesbian," she said. "This has put my life at increased risk."
Moreover, in Uganda, the Parliament still did not come to a conclusion about the 'Kill the gays' law which can pass soon and condemned gays and lesbians to the capital punishment.
Emma Ginn, coordinator of Medical Justice, said: "Despite compelling medical evidence, the UK Border Agency disbelieves Ms Tibikawa's story. UKBA do not dispute that Ms Tibikawa has scars caused by a hot flat iron, but conclude that she did not suffer any ill-treatment in Uganda. We condemn the fact that they intend to deport Ms Tibakawa to a country where being gay is illegal and puts your life at risk."
Gauri van Gulik of Human Rights Watch also said: "Our research has shown that many cases of women like Betty are not taken seriously by the UK Border Agency. Unfortunately women who suffer this kind of violence have serious difficulty claiming asylum."
And a British spokesperson of the UK border agency said: "The government has made it clear that it is committed to stopping the removal of asylum seekers who have genuinely had to leave particular countries because of their sexual orientation or gender identification.
"However, when someone is found not to have a genuine claim we expect them to leave voluntarily."
